Bee Gees Demos – Part 17

E.S.P. Demos

Recording of these demos began in 1986, in New York in October and then at Maurice’s home studio in Miami.

The instrumental tracks were done October 1986 into 1987.

This was followed by recording of the vocal tracks at an unknown studio.

More detail can be found in Joe Brennan’s entry for this album.

1. E S P

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

There were a whole host of different versions of this song: An extended mix, E S P N R G mix, Extra Sensory House mix, E S Piano dub, Extra Energy mix, 12-inch single edit, an edit with no guitars and the ‘reprise’ edit.

The Reprise edit was tagged on to the album as the last track.

The ‘demo’ of ‘E S P’ was officially released on the box set ‘Tales from the Brothers Gibb’. It is missing the a-capella harmony intro of the finished track, but otherwise it very similar.

There are some lyrical differences, particularly in the first verses.

2. You Win Again

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

There was a remix of this song on the single B-side which was basically the same track with improved sound.

The demo is very similar to the finished version; obviously being a demo the instrumental track is more basic, but the vocal is pretty close.

3. Giving Up The Ghost

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

Robin on lead.  This demo has a lot of lyrical difference, as well as incomplete lyrics in places.  Repetition is also a problem.

4. Angela

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

The vocal on this demo is mixed into the right channel only, which is problem listening through headphones – at least for me, being half-deaf in the right ear!

There are some lyrical differences, but it’s almost complete.  The guitar is a lot more prevalent on the demo – according to Joe Brennan it is on the final track but is lost.  I’ll have to take his word for it because I can’t hear it on the album!

5. Overnight

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

The demo has Barry singing lead in falsetto, which gives it a different dimension to the finished song with Maurice on lead!

Some minor lyrical differences and apart from the verses it’s pretty similar to the album version.

6. Young Love

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

Unreleased.

This song has a catchy chorus, some incomplete lyrics but it shows a lot of promise.  Yet another fine song shown the door!
